In March 1985, armed with faith, determination and only $20,000 in hand, the brethrenembarked upon the breaking of ground for the proposed new church building. Thechurch had intended to construct a two-storey complex estimated to cost $400,000,however this was rejected by the Conference Council. Disappointed but not discouragedthe proposal was adjusted to cost approximately $240,000. With tremendous supportfrom the Denomination through the assistance of work crews and community support, the construction was well on its way. By January 1986 the work had progressed to thepoint where the roof was installed. In October of that same year the brethren decided “totry out” the building despite the lack of windows, doors and flooring. However, once inthey decided they were not going back to the old building. With unbelievable co-operation, sacrifice and determination the whole church was mobilized…everyone became involved. While the main construction was taking place another building was renovated andtransformed simultaneously into a comfortable home for the pastor and his family. Theywere able to take up residence in June 1986.By March 1987, preparations were in full gear for the official opening and dedication ofthe sanctuary. Sunday March 8, 1987 was a memorable afternoon when a hugecongregation gathered to give thanks and praise to God for seeing the work to its end,and for the construction cost which was approximately $240,000, with an outstanding debt of $20,000 (US$5,000).
In June 1990, ground was again broken, this time the focus was on the much neededBasic School for the children of the community. The Jamaica Youth for Christ, throughProject Serve, along with community organizations, corporate Jamaica and variousindividuals, gave financial and other support to this project. The dream was to open thefirst section of the building for the start of the school year in September 1992, theconstruction being two-thirds completed. The Basic School, continues to grow, with anenrolment of 128 students, six teachers and the principal. The ministry of the church has touched, and continues to impact many areas of thecommunity, such as:
